In 1992 on the eve of his 22nd birthday, Mickelson turned professional. His first professional win came in 1993 at the Torrey Pines. Many titles started to come along, including the Byron Nelson Golf Classic and the World Series of Golf in 1996.

For a while, there was a cloud hanging over Mickelson about whether he would ever win a major but he soon answered these problems. Mickelson picked up his first major championship win in 2004 at the US Masters after shooting a final round 69. He finished 9-under-par for the Championship, with Ernie Els just one shot behind.

Mickelson’s 2004 Masters victory was ranked number 9 in TV’s guide list of the “25 Most Awesome Sports Moments” (of the last 15 years).

Major number two came in the PGA Championship in 2005 at Baltusrol Golf Club in New Jersey, where he finished one shot ahead of Thomas Bjorn and Steve Elkington.

Mickelson then added another two Masters wins in 2006 and 2010, this time winning them in a less nerve-racking fashion.

In 2013, the American picked up his first British Open Championship after triumphing at Muirfield. The five times major champion scored 3-under-par for the four rounds, finishing three shots ahead of second placed Henrik Stenson. However, he didn’t have it all his own way, as he found himself five shots off the lead but Mickelson surged to a superb 5-under-par on the final day after birdying four of the last six holes.

I DON’T know about you but I enjoy a flutter at the Open. It adds a bit of interest and keeps the focus going when slumped in front of a TV set. Now there are various betting methods and I’m not trying to persuade you that I am any kind…
