TOURNAMENT: Sony Open
HOST COURSE: Waialae Country Club Hawaii
PRIZE FUND: $5,200,000
COURSE DETAILS: par 70, 7,060 yards. Golf has been played at Waialae Country Club since 1927 but the course as it appears today was modified for the Sony Open in 1999. The stunning views of the mountains and the ocean complement the beautifully presented layout.
KEY HOLE: the 189-yard par-3 17th is the signature hole. Five bunkers surround the green and par will be a good score for anyone.
The PGA Tour remains in beautiful Hawaii for the second week of the 2007 season. FedEx Cup points will again be available as the field tries to catch Vijay Singh after his impressive victory at Kapalua. As with last week’s event, strong winds are expected to make low scoring difficult and solid ball striking will be hugely important.
Michelle Wie will be looking for an improvement in front of her home fans after missing the cut in this event on her three previous appearances. Interestingly, if she does decide to enrol in college, as expected, this could be her last Sony Open for a number of years.
Again, a strong field will compete despite it being so early in the season. This includes Singh, Luke Donald and defending champion David Toms. Toms cruised to victory last year by five shots from Rory Sabbatini who also competes this week.
CONTENDERS: Vijay Singh, Geoff Ogilvy, Luke Donald
