Courses 101-110

101. Nefyn & District (2004 position – 102)
6108 yards; Par 70; SSS 71
Green fees £16.50-£40
Tel: 01758 720102
www.nefyn-golf-club.com

The undoubted charm of Nefyn lies in its ever-changing elevations and fairways that roller-coaster. There’s also plenty of blind drives and approach shots to relish. No two holes present players with the same challenge, with shots uphill, downhill, and ever changing winds.

102. West Hill (94)
6301 yards; Par 69; SSS 71
Green fees £40-£60
Tel: 01483 474365
www.westhill-golfclub.co.uk

The course isn’t long, but has some tricky holes and the gorse and heather penalise wayward tee shots and approaches. It was typical of the heathland courses that are found in Surrey, with widespread gorse and heather. The course was in excellent condition and nicely laid out.

103. Tenby (84)
6026 yards; Par 68; SSS 70
Green fees £36-£45
Tel: 01843 844447
www.tenbygolf.co.uk

Tenby sets out its stall from the start with a tough opener, and what follows is an enjoyable and often tricky links experience. The wind certainly plays its part here and there are some very tough holes indeed. Not overly long and will suit golfers of all abilities. Great value.

104. Donegal (new entry)
6937 yards; Par 73; SSS 73
Green fees E55-E70
Tel: 00353 74 973 4054
www.donegalgolfclub.ie

Beautifully located Donegal, also known as Murvagh, is a links that’s mature beyond its years and one of Darren Clarke’s favourites. A long and tough opening par-5 sets the tone for your round and you will need to be spot on with your driver in order to conquer this beautiful track.

105. Hanbury Manor (107)
6678 yards; Par 72; SSS 72
Green fees £45-£85 for hotel residents only
Tel: 01920 487722
www.hanbury-manor.com

Two par 5s stand out here – the sweeping downhill 2nd and 17th, both protected by greenside lakes. The course has excellent putting surfaces that are fast and true and was beautifully maintained. Very good facilities here and a warm welcome from all the staff.

106. Cruden Bay (106)
6291 yards; Par 70; SSS 72
Green fees £30-£70
Tel: 01779 812414
www.crudenbaygolfclub.co.uk

A spectacular setting amongst huge sand dunes, this is not just a pretty course. It also features some of the most enthralling and technically demanding holes of any course in this list and is a real challenge for all golfers. A thoroughly demanding and enjoyable experience of purist links golf.

107. London Club Heritage Course (new entry)
6771 yards; Par 72; SSS 73
Green fees available on application – play only possible with a member
Tel: 01474 879899
www.londongolf.co.uk

Designed by Jack Nicklaus, this has vast bunkers and water hazards that require powerful ball striking throughout the round. Anyone not on top form from the tee will be punished and the rough in places is quite thick. A varied test of golf with several contrasting par-4s, par-3s and par-5s.

108. Luffenham Heath (83)
6418 yards; Par 70; SSS 71
Green fees £28-£40
Tel: 01708 720298
www.luffenhamheath.co.uk

The course is a good test of all-round ability, with some holes long, and the shorter ones protected by some extremely penal rough. The welcome is very warm and the clubhouse was extremely impressive. Some shots are blind and so a pre-round chat with the pro could be invaluable.

109. Fulford (109)
6743 yards; Par 72; SSS 72
Green fees £35-50
Tel: 01904 412882
www.fulfordgolfclub.co.uk

It’s a tough opening, with the first three holes all challenging par 4s. A stern test and even the very best players will find it as such. The fairways are very spongy and easy to walk on, while the mature woodland makes for a lovely setting. The staff are very proud of their club and the friendly welcome I received reflected this.

110. Lundin Links (97)
6371 yards; Par 71; SSS 71
Green fees £25-£50
Tel: 01333 320051
www.lundingolfclub.co.uk

An interesting blend of links and inland holes, this offers a superb opening stretch and an intimidating approach to the final green. It is rare to find such variety on one course and this in itself ensures a good recommendation. The condition of the course was first-class too.
