A pick of the best social media posts from fellow tour players and legends of sport reacting to Henrik Stenson's Open Championship victory

Following Henrik Stenson’s amazing final round to win the 145th Open Championship, the world took to social media to pay tribute to his performance.

Stenson is a popular man amongst his fellow players and so he wasn’t short of messages of congratulations. Sergio Garcia was one of the chasing pack on Sunday, eventually finishing in a tie for fifth and sent this tweet shortly after the tournament concluded.

Stenson also set records tumbling on Sunday at Royal Troon, one of which becoming the first male Swede to win a major championship. Fellow Swede and major winner on the ladies circuit, Annika Sorenstam, paid this tribute on Instagram.

Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke also weighed in on Twitter and must be delighted to have another major winner on his team for the biennial dual in September at Hazeltine.

For many, this will be the best finish to an Open Championship they’ve ever seen. Jack Nickluas and Tom Watson’s ‘Dual in the Sun’ at Turnberry in 1977 was widely regarded as the most exciting final rounds in the tournament’s history but this year’s tussle, being billed as the ‘Battle in the Breeze’ certainly pushes it close. Here’s what Nicklaus had to say about it.

Lee Westwood also mustered a top-25 finish and was keen to congratulate the Swede.

Putting coach Phil Kenyon works with many of the top players, including Stenson, and managed to get a picture with his star pupil and the Claret Jug.

2012 Open Champion Ernie Els also said his piece on Twitter, as did two-time Major champion Jordan Spieth.

There was plenty of support from outside of golf too, as other sportsman were apparently glued to the thrilling finale, including Alan Shearer and Joey Barton.
