Jason Day wins US PGA Championship

Australian Jason Day won his first Major Championship following a superb final round of 67 meant he had a three shot victory over American Jordan Spieth.

An emotional Day wept on the 72nd green as he waited to tap in for the par that would secure his win. He had got so close recently with an incredible nine top 10s sine 2010.

Day started the final round two shots clear of Spieth and never gave up the lead with seven birdies and some imperious shots throughout.

Spieth of course was going for his third Major win of the season, but this runner-up finish caps an incredible year for the 21-year-old in the Majors with two wins and two second places – he is now the new World Number One replacing Rory McIlroy.

Englishman Justin Rose finished in 4th place with a two-under-par 70, he just couldn’t get the big run required to put the pressure on the leaders.

Dustin Johnson who controversially missed out on a play-off the last time the USPGA Championship was held at Whistling Straits, had an absolutely bonkers round. Starting with an 8 on the 1st he then hot 6 birdies and two eagles to shoot 68 and finish 12 under par and Tied 7th.

Rory McIlroy finished off his comeback from injury with an impressive three under 69 to finish at nine under par and in 17th. He must be satisfied with his performance, given that a week ago it was not clear he would be even playing in the tournament.

Jason Day said after his win “It’s amazing to get the feeling of being a Major Champion. I had a good feeling coming into this week, I have been hitting the ball great. I hit the fairways and greens and really manned up and got the job done.”
