Charley Hull wins English girls' U13 championship

Charley Hull & Bronte Law

Charley Hull, the 12-year-old started the final round with a four shot lead and finished with a three-stroke win. But Cheshire’s Bronte Law, who was both her playing partner and closest rival, challenged strongly for the title.

After eight holes, in which the girls had traded both birdies and bogeys, the two players were level. Charley immediately drew ahead again, when she birdied the 9th while Bronte dropped a shot, and she kept in front for the rest of the round.

Charley, who plays at Kettering and finished the 54-hole event on seven over par, said of her first English title: “It’s great.”

She’s used to the big occasion having won a national competition for club golfers at the age of nine. She’s currently the Northamptonshire girls’ champion, regional four counties junior champion and a member of the county first team.

Bronte, 13, was disappointed to finish as runner-up for the second year in succession but said: “I couldn’t have done any more than I did today. It wasn’t my day. Charley deserved it, she played three rounds of good golf.”

Bronte, who plays off two at Bramhall, is the Cheshire U16 and U13 champion and plays for the county girls’ team.

Both girls now move on to more competition. Bronte is heading for Scotland and the St Andrews junior ladies’ open while Charley’s next date is the Midland girls’ championship.
