Figueiredo wins Boys Amateur Championship final

Portugal's young star Pedro Figueiredo claimed The Boys Amateur Championship at Little Aston in Birmingham with a victory over Scotland's Fraser McKenna at the 39th hole of a truly memorable final.

“To win The Boys, probably the best competition for under 18s in the world, is just amazing" said Figueiredo, who has had a fabulous year with wins in the Portuguese Open and Closed Championships and the Irish Amateur as well as reaching the quarter-finals of The Amateur Championship at Turnberry.

The young Portuguese had to fight all the way against McKenna who is a member of the Scottish boys training squad. Figueiredo was never in front until the 28th hole when he had a run of four successive wins to go from two down to two up.

McKenna fought back, helped by his opponent missing two short putts at the 15th and 16th and was one up going down the last. Figueiredo was 40ft left of the pin in two with McKenna slightly closer on the back of the green and the young Scot could only smile in disbelief as his opponent sank his 40-footer to shatter his dream.

He battled on for three more holes but when he failed to get up and down out of a greenside bunker at the long third, Figueiredo, who had chipped up to two feet, sank his birdie putt to claim the title of 2008 Boys Amateur Champion and the impressive trophy, which includes the likes of Jose Maria Olazabal and Sergio Garcia amongst its former winners.
