Kendleshire trio seek to capture champion club crown

Lloyd, 16, won the Ernie Els Junior Championship in South Africa earlier this year, and will be looking to steer The Kendleshire team to a better finish than equal sixth they achieved last year. He will be backed by team-mates Oliver Glaze, the Gloucestershire Champion and Chris Evans.

But they will face strong opposition from a number of county champions not least Brokenhurst Manor from Hampshire, the defending champions, who include two members of their 2007 winning line-up at Hesketh. Martin Young, the 2006 English Mid Amateur champion and runner-up last year, will again be joined by Robert Gowers, a member of the England under 16 squad, and by Jonathan Watt.

Worthing, last year’s runners-up, are competing again in the capable hands of Joe Doherty, the county champion, Scott Nightingale and Ben Martin, as are Brancepeth Castle from Durham who include the experienced Richard Aisbitt and Michael Curry.

Former boy cap Billy Fowles is included in a strong Wentworth team along with Warren Harmston, while Workington, the Cumbrian Champions, include William Bowe, a former England under 16 and youth international.

Stoke Park from BB&O also have an experienced squad in Steve Barwick, Kevin Freeman and John McNally, while David Coupland, a member of the England ‘A’ squad, who reached the last 16 of the recent English Amateur, will spearhead Lincolnshire champions Boston’s challenge.

There are also powerful teams from Coxmoor, the Nottinghamshire champions, who include Derek McJannet and Ross Overton, Sundridge Park, who have Kent Champion Liam Burns and West Essex with Ross Spurgeon and Jack Heasman, an England under 16 squad member.

The Champion Club Tournament is decided on aggregate over 36 holes of stroke play with all three cards to count each day.

The English Champion Club Tournament at The Wiltshire Golf Club, Wootton Bassett, will take place on 29th - 30th August.
