Edgbaston Golf Club will be a fixture in Birmingham's city centre for at least another century after its long term future was secured.

Successful negotiations with Calthorpe Estates resulted in the signing of a new 99 year lease, enabling the retention of the city centre golf course and its historic clubhouse.

Edgbaston Golf Club was founded in 1896 and initially operated at Warley Woods and Harborne before moving to a new site in Edgbaston in 1935.

It is located within two miles of Birmingham's city centre and was once home to the Calthorpe family.

The club boasts an 18 hole golf course - designed by Harry Colt - set over 144 acres of land, and the clubhouse is a Grade 2 listed building.

The club heightens the overall cultural appeal of the city and has hosted tournament such as the Warwickshire Professional Strokeplay Championship and the English Girls Championship.

Adam Grint, General Manager of Edgbaston Golf club, said: "We are delighted to have been give the opportunity the continue occupation of this unique city centre golfing location. Agreeing such a lengthy lease represents an enormous milestone for us."

He added: "In recent years we invested heavily in the course... the greens have never been in better shape and we have a thriving club that continues to attract more players."

Edgbaston Golf Club also has restaurant, conference and wedding facilities, with the new lease sure to draw attention to this 'best kept secret.'
