Welcome to Golf Monthly's coverage of the 2006 Open Championship. This year the great event returns to Royal Liverpool Golf Club after an absence of some 39 years. The last time the battle for the Claret Jug was fought out over the magnificent Hoylake links Roberto De Vicenzo edged out the great Jack Nicklaus to win. This year looks set to be another classic contest. Defending Champion Tiger Woods will start out as favourite but a strong field will provide stiff competition and who knows, this year could finally be the year that a home-grown golfer breaks our Major drought. Check back here for daily updates from the Golf Monthly team who will be at Hoylake bringing you the latest news and views on the 135th Open Championship from the practice days right through the winning putt on Sunday evening.
