Mickelson has been the best player in the US Masters over the past five years. He has won twice, been placed third on a further two occasions and averaged 70.40 per round.
“Lefty” will return to Augusta – a course he has described as among his favourites – as defending champion and ranked third in the world. He has also suggested that he might be employing a different game strategy this time around, using Callaway’s new square driver, as he believes it allows him to hit the ball straighter.
Mickelson has had a relatively sedate opening to 2007 with disappointing performances at the WGC-Accenture Match Play and Arnold Palmer Invitational but scored a victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and T2 at the Nissan Open.
