First West Midlands Regional Qualifier hailed swinging success for Christian Golf Society

Winners: Phil Yates and Keith Watts, Walsall Christian Fellowship

Phil Yates and Keith Watts representing Walsall Christian Fellowship, battled against the windy and wet conditions but were eventually crowned champions of the West Midlands. The day that saw some fantastic golf in harsh conditions included bacons rolls on arrival, a round of golf, three course meal and guest speaker with prizes for the winners, runners-up, nearest the pin and the longest drive.

The West Midlands Regional qualifier, which is part of the Christian Golf Society’s National Tournament was sponsored by Streetly Community Baptist Church, Sutton Coldfield.

John Dadd organiser said, “It was a great day of golf and new friendships were developed as we walked and played the course. We are already promising to hold a another competition next year where we hope to see more churches from across the West Midlands entering.”

There are two other regional heats that have taken place in Essex (June) and Surrey (July), all leading to the national final at Hellidon Lakes Hotel and Golf Club in Northamptonshire between September 28 and 29.

The first prize for winning the national tournament is two holidays at Le Pas Opton, the Spring Harvest Holidays resort on the French Vendee Coast - provided by sponsor Spring Harvest Holidays.

The Christian Golf Society was formed in February 2007. The society looks for a three-fold commitment from Christians attending - to ‘PRAY’ for people they invite, ‘PLAY’ golf in a way that reflects their faith, and respectfully ‘SAY’ anything about their faith when asked about it.

Cornwall, Hampshire, West Sussex and Scotland are expected to hold further qualifiers for the national competition in the future.
