Is it any wonder that some players don’t relish talking to the press when they get asked questions like these?
Practice Days
Q: Did it hurt that the Championship was gone from this course for so long, and what was your emotion when you found out that Royal Liverpool was to stage the event again?
Peter Thomson: It didn’t affect my life at all.
Q: You’re going to play with a young French player who won the British Amateur. I just wanted to know what advice could you give to him, because he’s quite impressed with you. His name is Julien Guerrier
Tiger Woods: I am not going to play with him
Q: Do you ever try to envision that shot (on the 18th at Winged Foot in the US Open) on the practice ground?
Colin Montgomerie: No, I don’t want to replicate that bloody thing at all.
Q: Ernie said that when he came to play the course a few weeks ago, he was surprised to see Phil Mickelson’s name written in the visitor’s book. Did you see any names above you that surprised you – Jones, Hagen, de Vicenzo?
Phil Mickelson: They weren’t here that week
Day One
Q: How frustrating was your putting given the amount of practice you’ve done?
Colin Montgomerie: Very, very, very
Q: The wind is picking up and the course seems to be drying. Was it an advantage to play this morning?
Ernie Els: What do you think, mate?
Q: Do you have any particular way that you deal with a situation like that triple bogey?
Mark Hensby: Yeah, I got pissed off.
Q: Did you think at this stage you would be leading the Open Championship?
Anthony Wall: No reason why not; I have two legs and two arms.
Q: Since you won here as an amateur, have you been back to this course since then?
Mikko Ilonen: I just said five minutes ago that this is my first time back here since 2000.
Q: Can you confirm that your father is still a black cab driver?
Anthony Wall: No, he hasn’t been a cab driver for many years.
