Course of the Week - Lindrick

The course here is set on magnesian limestone, which means drainage is excellent and play is possible all year round. It also means the fairways are fast running. This is one of the reasons British captain Dai Rees chose Lindrick for the 1957 Ryder Cup. The Welshman felt the Americans wouldn’t be able to deal with the hard ground. He was right – Britain won 7.5-4.5.

Course lowdown: Lindrick is not a long course so strategy is essential. Be cautious from the tee. Go for position. A long iron rather than a driver is the smart play so you are in the correct position to fire at the small greens. The 5th, a par 4 of 431 yards, is the toughest. It requires a blind tee shot over a bank, up to a narrow fairway. This is followed by a long shot to the green. Strategic bunkering up the length of the hole adds to the difficulty. It’s unusual to have a par 3 for the last hole and this is a tough one. The elevated green is well bunkered and if you miss you’re faced with a tricky up and down in front of the clubhouse.

Stats: par 71, SSS 71, 6,606 yards

Green fees: £50wd round, £65wd day, £65 Sundays round

Location: Lindrick Common, Worksop, Nottinghamshire S81 8BH

History: In July 1891, the first meeting of the committee of what is now Lindrick Golf Club met to consider the formation of a Golf Club, and to consider a number of potential sites. Later that month it was agreed that the course should be sited on Lindrick Common and within 3 months the course was open, with the first competition being played in April 1892. The club was originally named The Sheffield and District Golf Club, but this was changed in 1934 and the full name of the club is now "Lindrick Golf Club (Sheffield and District)".
