Nick Faldo finalises his 2008 Ryder Cup team
Nick Faldo has shocked the golf world and selected Ian Poulter as one of his two wildcard picks for the 2008 Ryder Cup matches at Valhalla in September.
Press and pundits had tipped Darren Clarke to be selected alongside Paul Casey as the two wild cards, but in the end Poulter got the call he was hoping for, despite opting to play in the Fed-Ex Cup event on the PGA Tour rather than try to play his way into the team at Gleneagles during this week's Johnnie Walker Championship.
Faldo's two selections mean the team will line up as follows
2008 European Ryder Cup Team
Padraig Harrington Ire
Sergio Garcia Spa
Lee Westwood Eng
Henrik Stenson Swe
Robert Karlsson Swe
Miguel Angel Jimenez Spa
Graeme McDowell NI
Justin Rose Eng
Soren Hansen Den
Oliver Wilson Eng
Ian Poulter Eng
Paul Casey Eng
The 37th Ryder Cup takes place at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, from 19-21 September.

How Brian can say Sandy deserves Ryder Cup captaincy above the most successful European golfer of modern times beggars belief! Sandy comes across as a great bloke & had a very natural swing good enough to win 2 Majors before he started lsitening to all & sundry & forgot how to do it, but to say he ranks in stature as a potential Captain above Faldo? Faldo was already a top golfer with multiple tour titles (including PGAs) when he decided he had to completely change his swing to win Majors... how much more vindication does anyone need? If I was a Ryder Cup debutant struggling with my swing on the Thursday afternoon at Valhalla I know who I would want to ask for advice!
Most of the guys in the team probably grew up with Faldo as their golfing idol & will be dying to prove to him how much they deserve to be on his team. I am sure Nick put many noses out of joint when he was at the top. Many good European golfers with poor Major & Ryder Cup records who have already been Ryder Cup captains never seem to be backward in coming forward to criticise Nick or to rip up good luck messages etc when asked to comment by the Press. I fully expect Faldo to rub their noses in it by beating the USA by a record margin, just as he used to do on the course. I've just seen Azinger's picks & there is not one of our guys who would not be confident of beating at least 10 out of their 12... bring it on, can't wait!
