Rain stops play in Shanghai

The second day of the HSBC Champions, which is being played in Shanghai, was washed out after heavy rain flooded the course.

The event, which is host to names like Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia and Anthony Kim, is the first in the new “Race to Dubai” series.

David Probyn, the tournament director, said: "Our prime objective and our current intention is to complete 72 holes in the HSBC Champions.

“Round Two is scheduled to start at 6.45am tomorrow morning and our plan will be to put the players straight back out for the third round without a redraw.”

Although the forecast for the weekend looks slightly better, the leading players will still be expected to complete their third rounds on Sunday, before teeing up for their final round.

Probyn said: "Clearly if we have further delays to this schedule there is a strong possibility that play in the fourth round may need to be completed on Monday morning.”

Sweden’s Henrik Stenson leads the tournament after the first day, having shot a 65. Four players are tied one shot behind, including Sergio Garcia and Phil Mickelson, who are competing for the world No2 spot.
