Faldo keen on captaincy

Faldo would relish Ryder Cup captaincy again

Nick Faldo has declared how he’d gladly take on the role of Ryder Cup captain once again despite his defeat in charge of the 2008 team.

The disappointment at Valhalla was Europe’s first defeat since 1999 and Faldo shouldered much of the resultant criticism.

Questioning began when he selected wild cards Paul Casey and Ian Poulter ahead of the experienced Colin Montgomerie and Darren Clarke.

And despite Poulter proving a massive success Faldo took the heat for his handling of team affairs and some surprising pairing selections.

However, the 51-year-old, who has recently spent time in Brazil with the Faldo Series, has thrown his hat back into the ring for future team captain selection.

"The Ryder Cup has been a major part of my career. I played for 20 years as a player and I thought it would be a great honour to be there first-hand and it was,” he said.

"In the team room that week, I brought in the caddies, the wives, fiancées and girlfriends, and I deemed the team as 36 people.

“We all had meetings as a group and the atmosphere was really special in there. Would I do the same all over again? Yeah, I loved the experience."

Europe will attempt to regain the Ryder Cup when the Americans come to Celtic Manor in 2010.

Where next?
