Lian Wen-Cho topped the UBS Hong Kong Champions 2008 leaderboard after round 1
Liang Wen-chong and Richard Sterne lead the way after round one of the UBS Hong Kong Open after the pair shot six-under-par 64s at Fanling.
South Africa’s Sterne fired eight birdies in his round but two bogeys denied him the outright lead.
“I had a pretty good start and I just kept going,” said Sterne. “From the Masters on I have really struggled but I am still working on a few things.”
Liang bogeyed the last, but despite that the Chinese No.1 looks in good shape to become the first Asian to win the event in a decade.
“My performance was good but there are still three days left," said Liang.
"My putting feels good and I have been very patient in taking every hole step by step."
Oliver Wilson, who lost out in a play-off to Sergio Garcia at the HSBC Champions in the Race to Dubai season-opener, holed a birdie putt on 18 and the Englishman is just two off the lead.
Elsewhere, John Daly and Colin Montgomerie closed with respectable 68s, but Nick Faldo, playing in his first European Tour event in over a year, finished on two-over.
