Paul Azinger could retain the Ryder Cup captaincy for 2010

Paul Azinger could stay on as captain of the American Ryder Cup team for the 2010 match at Celtic Manor in Wales.

The Professional Golfers' Association of America normally make a captaincy decision within six weeks of the event, but despite no announcement being made, speculation is growing that the 48-year-old will stay in charge.

Azinger, when asked about the possibility of remaining as captain, said: "You probably should address all those questions to the PGA of America and not to me at this point."

"I don't know how to respond just yet. When I say that, I'm saying I don't know what you're supposed to know with respect to the PGA of America.

"They want to get their message out when they get their message out and I don't want to jump the gun. I'm going to abstain - it's kind of their message, and I'm going to let them deliver you that message."

Ben Hogan was the last United States captain to keep the job 1949, but Azinger received enormous credit for America’s victory at Valhalla, which ended Europe’s recent Ryder Cup domination.

Not long ago Nick Faldo stated he’d relish the chance to captain Europe again despite taking a great deal of criticism for Europe’s defeat in September.
