Taylor Made r7 Draw driver.
For over 12 months, in fact since I took up the game, I had played with a Ram driver which came with my beginners set. As a raw beginners driver it was a little used weapon in the armoury.
Undersized, frighteningly "whippy" action, not something that exactly inspired confidence at address.
Upgrade time came along and off I went to my local golf store to play with several drivers.
Owing to the fact that I was a high handicap golfer I was looking for something that would help my game, but not break the bank.
Out onto the driving range armed with my chosen 4 drivers and a basket of balls, the time to decide on my next level of driver had begun.
Out of the 4 drivers the Taylor Made r7 Draw driver fitted my requirements nicely.
The name boasts a club that will create a drawn ball flight when struck. OK for low handicappers who know how to make a golf club sing. In my case I was looking for a club to keep me away from the right hand side of the fairway (generally the rough!)
Comparing the r7 to my current driver, the benefits were easy to spot from the start.
A confidence inspiring large 460cc titanium head, "conventional driver" appearance and large sweet spot immediately encouraged inspiration.
For my driver trial I had chosen the 10.5 degree model as I felt I didn't have a problem gaining lofted ball flight with my drives.
First impressions were good as I waggled the club in all directions prior to hitting a ball. Weight and balance felt good. The club felt "right." The usual Taylor Made yellow and red graphics on the shaft were vivid, but not too gaudy as to distract the golfer. To be honest, I've seen drivers with far louder graphics.
Several balls were struck with obvious varying results for a high handicapper. However, the underlying theme was the new found distance which again provided confidence.
After several more practise shots I honestly saw an improvement in my driving. The ball was flying straight down the middle. ie, where I was actually aiming. I also found on several drives that I was actually creating a draw. If I could do it, the results from a lower handicap golfer should be far more consistant.
It was the driver for me, and at the price it was offered was a bargain too.
It's one thing being a proficient and consistant golfer on the driving range, but the proof of the pudding comes on the golf course.
1st tee, 1st outing with new big stick. Teed up, a relatively shorter backswing saw my drive scream off and straight down the middle of the fairway.
That was me sorted!
My only gripe is the headcover, it just seems too tight for the club head and already shows signs of splitting at the seams. Sort that out Taylor Made, and you have an excellent driver.
