England's Jeremy Kavanagh qualifies for Open Championship

England’s Jeremy Kavanagh obtained his place for The Open Championship at Turnberry, by securing a par on the 18th hole of the International Final Qualifier-Africa.
Kavanagh joins IFQ-Africa winner Marc Cayeux of Zimbabwe and South Africa’s Jaco Ahlers as qualifiers for July’s Open Championship at Turnberry’s Ailsa Course.
“I feel a bit shocked and the feeling has not sunk in yet, but I’ve got mixed emotions and don’t know whether to laugh or cry,” said an emotional Kavanagh.
“I’ve got to give credit to my family who backed me all the way, and I’m really looking forward to playing in The Open and doing something special out there.”
Cayeux qualified with rounds of 69 and 68 to win by one stoke, and reflected: “I feel pretty honoured to be playing in The Open, and at the age of 31 I feel I’ve done well, so I’m happy.
“I want to play well, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the experience.”
Ahlers finished his round with five birdies, shooting the lowest score of the tournament in a flawless round of five-under par 65 to secure his entry.
Further qualifying opportunities are scheduled in the coming months with the IFQ-Europe taking place at Sunningdale in June.
