Tiger Woods fired a superb final round of 65 to win the Memorial Touranament at Muirfield Village by a single shot from Jim Furyk. It was Tiger’s 67th career PGA Tour title.
The World Number 1 found himself in a four-way tie for the lead with two holes remaining at Muirfield Village but, when it counted, he was able to find that typical Tiger magic to lift him clear of the pack.
On the 17th he hit a towering nine iron into the rock hard green that stopped softly on the top shelf, giving him a 10-foot birdie opportunity that he duly converted. Then, on the final hole, he played a seven iron approach that ended just a foot from the cup giving him a mere tap-in to secure the victory, his fourth at Muirfield Village.
“I knew I could do this,” Woods said. “I was close to winning, but the game wasn't quite there when I really needed it on Sunday. I rectified that.”
Woods’ return to form comes at the perfect time as he prepares to defend his US Open title in two weeks time. After the event, tournament host Jack Nicklaus made a bold proclamation. Talking about Tiger’s 14 career Majors he said, “I suspect No. 15 will come for Tiger Woods in about two weeks. If he drives the ball this way, and plays this way, I'm sure it will. And if not, it will surprise me greatly.”
Jim Furyk made a 20-foot putt on the final hole that ensured he finished alone in second place, three shots ahead of Mark Wilson and Jonathan Byrd.
