After claiming he would take a break from golf following the Masters, Tiger Woods has announced his return to the PGA Tour, in Charlotte, North Carolina in two weeks' time.

The world number one will tee it up at the Quail Hollow Championship to mark his second event since his five-month break from the game in the wake of revelations about his private life.

"I'm excited about competing," Woods told his website. "It's a wonderful venue, and they always have a great field."

The news comes at a time when much press activity has focused on suspicions that Woods' wife, Elin is filing for a divorce and has met with a personal lawyer.

Woods meanwhile appears to be looking to return to a regular schedule as he competes in an event where tickets are sold to the general public - much unlike the controlled spectator system employed at the Masters.

Woods won at Quail Hollow in 2007 and his decision to tee up at a regular event on April 29 will undoubtedly please the PGA Tour ahead of the more prestigious Players' Championship at Sawgrass.

Tournament director, Kym Hougham, said: "I think our crowds are very respectful and they always have been. The players have always told us that. If there is inappropriate behaviour, we'll act on it swiftly.

"I'm sure that if Tiger didn't feel we could handle it he wouldn't be coming here."

Woods has also confirmed his appearance at Pebble Beach in June for the US Open, where he will grace the scene of his 2000 triumph.

"It's always been one of my favourite courses," Woods added. "I can't wait to go back."
