Golf Monthly columnist Graeme McDowell and world number one Lee Westwood have both been named in the shortlist for BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2010.

Ten sportsmen and women from across the United Kingdom representing nine different sports, make up the shortlist for BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2010.

It has been a fantastic year for European golf with three of the four Major winners coming from the European Tour, and although Westwood was not one of those, another strong year saw the Worksop man replace Tiger Woods as world number one.

Westwood finished runner up in both The Masters and The Open and claimed a second career win on the US Tour with victory at the St Jude Classic in June.

Meanwhile, McDowell became Europe's first US Open champion for 40 years when he won his maiden Major title at Pebble Beach, three months before showing nerves of steel at Celtic Manor to win Europe the vital point to reclaim the Ryder Cup in the final singles match.

The public will be able to vote for their BBC Sports Personality of the Year by telephone; details of the numbers to vote on will be given out during the programme.

The shortlist of ten contenders was put together by a panel of 30 sports editors from (national and regional) newspapers and magazines and includes Mark Cavendish, Tom Daley, Jessica Ennis, David Haye, AP McCoy, Graeme Swann, Phil Taylor and Amy Williams.

This year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2010 is at Birmingham's LG Arena, and is the biggest in the show's history.
