Lough Erne Golf Resort in Ireland
Nick Faldo designed stunning Lough Erne
Ireland's newest golfing masterpiece Lough Erne officially opened on July 1. Designed by Nick Faldo, the 7,310 yard layout in County Fermanagh is set on a peninsula between Lower Lough Erne and Castle Hume Lough and is already being talked about as a future venue for the European Tour.
It’s easy to see why Rory McIlroy raves about the course after I was given the opportunity of sneak preview – it may have been typical Irish weather, but even the horizontal rain couldn’t dampen the spirits as we played some truly stunning holes.
It’s so good, it’s impossible to pick out any one hole and it is a tribute to Faldo’s growing reputation as a designer. At 7,310 yards off the back it’s plenty long enough for the big boys yet still eminently playable for your average golfer off the forward tees.
McIlroy, who represents Lough Erne on the tour, will play a special challenge match against, Padraig Harrington on July 22 at the course and he said: “I’m really looking forward to playing the course. I’ve seen it develop into an outstanding championship layout in superb condition and I know it will be on the must-play list for all golfers in Ireland, as well as all golfers coming to Ireland.”
McIlroy has a strong association with Lough Erne, having been encouraged in his early days by Jim Treacy, owner of the resort.
The resort now has two courses with the Castle Hume course already established nearby but the new development includes a 120 guestroom hotel with 25 lakeside lodges with superb views, plus a Thai Spa, Catalina Restaurant and Blaney Bar. oinciding with the launch, The Halfway House and Seafood Experience, a 34-seat restaurant overlooking lower Lough Erne and the Loughside Clubhouse with restaurant and bar will also officially open.
