1st Hole of the 2009 US Open golf tournament at Bethpage Black

US Open Golf
Bethpage Black
Hole 1 430 yards par 4
The opening hole is 430 yards on the Black Course and means either you lay it back with something less than a driver or challenge the rather severe dogleg right. A lay-up to the turn will leave 150 to 165 yards to the green.
The more aggressive tee shot around the corner requires great precision with both distance control and angle of play but may reward the player with nothing more than a wedge approach.
The front third of this putting green is severely sloped back to front, which will likely bring balls played short and with spin back to the very front of the green. The putting green is very narrow, leaving recovery from either side very difficult.
