Bill Longmuir is bidding for a US Open spot
Bill Longmuir is setting his sights on a dream place at this year’s US Open, nine years after he last played an event on the European Tour.
Thirty years ago the 55-year-old Scot led the Open Championship at Lytham after an opening round of 65, and he has entered next Monday's 36-hole tournament at Walton Heath.
He will only be able to play if he misses the halfway cut in this week's US Senior PGA Championship in Ohio.
"I'd love the chance. I've never played a US Open and it's a dream I've had all my life,” said Longmuir.
"I live near Walton Heath and this might be the last chance I have."
The veteran is eligible for final qualifying through finishing in the top five of the European Seniors Tour last season.
Other big names are scheduled to play at Walton Heath including Colin Montgomerie, unless the European Ryder Cup captain can earn an exempt spot at this week's BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
The US Open, which will be defended by Tiger Woods, takes place on Bethpage State Park Black Course on June 18-21.
