Last year's tournament was won by Jordan Spieth at five-under-par, Dustin Johnson three-putted for par from 12 feet on the final hole to finish one behind the Texan.
There are currently four players tied on four US Open wins each, including Jack Nicklaus and Ben Hogan.
11 amateurs have made it into the field including England's Sam Horsfield, world number one John Rahm from Spain and US Amateur Championship runner-up Derek Bard.
The world's top three players Jason Day, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy go into the event as favourites.
The winner will receive a replica of the trophy, with the real prize kept at the USGA Museum.
