However there was disappointment for Justin Rose, who failed to qualify at Monday’s event, just 24 hours after his victory at the Memorial tournament at Muirfield Village. Rose was joined on the US Open sidelines by Rickie Fowler.
Davis Love will be looking forward to teeing it up after his 18 consecutive US Opens streak ended last year. His final-hole birdie was enough to secure him a spot in a six-man play-off where he achieved one of the final five places.
“I’ve really been hitting the ball well and, like today, I made four bogeys and missed a bunch of easy birdie putts. It would have been a shame, the way I’m hitting it, not to get in,” said Love.
Other notable qualifying performances in Columbus were Australia’s Stuart Appleby and Aaron Baddeley, along with Bo Van Pelt.
Former PGA champion Shaun Micheel was among 12 players who qualified in Memphis, whilst Jason Gore, who was married on the 18th green at Pebble Beach, managed to qualify successfully in Rockville, Maryland.
