Lee Westwood’s hopes of breaking his Major championship duck at Hazeltine this weekend were raised on Sunday after he carded a closing 65 to finish ninth in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

The Englishman missed out a play-off at last month's Open Championship by a shot after bogeying the final hole, just over 12 months after suffering a similar fate in the US Open.

But the 36-year-old impressed in his first appearance since finishing third at Turnberry.

"I have got better as this week has gone on so I am really looking forward to next week," he said.

"It is the last major of the year and having come so close at the Open Championship, I will try and put that right next week and get the 'W' as they say over here."

Westwood admitted he would have gone closer to winning if he had holed as many putts earlier in the week as he had on Sunday.

"I just kept playing the way I had been playing all week," he said. "I hit a lot of good shots, hit it close a lot and was unlucky not to make a hole-in-one at the 12th, it just lipped out.

Westwood will be hoping to do better than last year’s performance at the PGA championship, when he missed the cut.
