Birr in County Offaly is a mature and challenging course with a rich history but we reckon its best feature is the quality of condition all year round. The excellent drainage and generally mild climate put pay to casual water. Waht you're left with is finely mown fairways and fast greens pretty much all year.

The most memorable holes are 10 and 15. The 10th is a par 4 that plays just 337 yards but the elevated green is cut out of woodland making an excellent feature that must be avoided at all costs. The 15th is a long par three that plays every bit of its 248 yards.

Birr extends a very warm welcome to visitors but its probably best to book before you arrive, especially if you're after a weekend round. The nearby town is pictuesque witha a castle that dominates.

Best Hole: It has to be the 10th - a make or break hole that requires careful thought.
