Our guide to the best putters 2020 has to offer, including models from recent launches from the likes of Scotty Cameron, Odyssey, Ping and TaylorMade

Best Putters 2020

Widely renowned as the most important club in the bag, the putter is where countless shots can be saved. Therefore finding the right one for you is imperative and because there are so many options and styles to choose from, we have put together this handy guide to tell you the best putters 2020 has to offer.

Many manufacturers are actually reducing the number of head shapes in their ranges and focusing on improved looks, feel and roll from their more compact collections.

Of course, there is still the choice to be made between a blade, mid-mallet or mallet. Blade style putters tend to suit ‘feel’ players with a stronger arc to their putting stroke, moving up into mallets that suit golfers who require extra alignment assistance and/or have much less rotation in their putting stroke.

Scotty Cameron Special Select Newport 2 Putter

+ It’s as good looking as ever and it really should inspire you on the greens
– It’s a premium product and therefore you’ll be paying premium prices

One of the best Scotty Cameron putters out right now, the Newport 2 is one of eight classic, tour-inspired shapes in the Special Select range.

It first came out in 1997 and the goal here was to make a new Newport 2 but not to reinvent it, just make it better. The width of the putter is quite a bit thinner and the, compared to the 2018 Select, is more stripped down and sleek. The topline had become thicker over the years to incorporate the weight but the tour stars wanted the putter to sit flatter on the ground and be thinner looking and this is the stunning result.

It’s subtle and Cameron says it’s the most tour-like product they’ve ever made for everyone.

TaylorMade TP Patina Collection Juno Putter

Best TaylorMade Putters

+ It’s a classic and will catch the eye of any blade devotee
– May not be the easiest to align

One of the most traditional, clean-looking, and best TaylorMade putters on the market, the Juno was in the bag of Collin Morikawa when he landed the PGA Championship earlier this year. The American has been searching high and low for the right putter and he’d been through the range when he settled upon the Juno.

“I like messing around with different shapes but I’ve come to realise that I need a putter that just sits nicely in my hands. So when I put it down I don’t have to adjust my body, it just sits where I want my hands to be, where I want my body and eye-line to be.”

With his particular putter they flattened the lie angle a touch and off he went.

The TP Patina Collection comprises a mix of classic blades and modern mallets to suit a variety of strokes and preferences.

Odyssey Stroke Lab Black Bird of Prey Putter

Stroke-Lab-Black-2019-Bird-Of-Prey-Double-Bend-Hero-web

+ Sounds and feels great and should be a big help on those longer putts
– It’s pretty out there and futuristic in terms of looks

This is a fascinating looking putter and one of the most forgiving putters on the market. It is a super-high MOI product and the length of the face is long but the insert and grooves are quite concentrated and there’s plenty of feedback on the strike.

The High Def alignment is just one bold white line all the way to the back of the head which will also give you some help on your path.

Within the Stroke Lab Black range there are a whole host of designs to choose from whether it be blades, mallets or mid-mallets.

Bettinardi Inovai 6.0 Putter

+ It frames the ball perfectly at address
– Another pricey offering but the looks are quite special

This is a striking putter with the contrasting cobalt blue and platinum finish. There’s no insert, rather the face has been precision milled from stainless steel with an aluminum rear. The result is Bettinardi’s best feeling MOI putter with optimal weight distribution.

This is based on tour feedback to put together a more solid MOI putter without using any inserts and it was put straight into various bags of those players.

TaylorMade Truss TB1 Putter

+ A blade with mallet-like assistance, what’s not to like?
– A lot has gone into this and it’s fairly pricey

Dustin Johnson is renowned for mixing things up at the putter end of the bag and he first tried the Truss mallet before putting the TB1 into play and winning at the Travelers. He has grown up using a blade but enjoys the benefits of a mallet so this was ideal and it offered him more stability.

To enhance the quality of the roll all the Truss putters have the same Surlyn insert found in the Spider putters while the grooves are designed to get the ball rolling rather than skidding.

There are four designs to choose from, two of which are blades and two are mallet designs.

Ping Heppler Fetch Putter

+ Will help with consistency
+ Will suit those wanting a firmer feeling putter
– The look won’t be for everyone

Ping are trying to keep things relatively simple with their putter families as there are, broadly speaking, just two to focus on – Sigma 2, which was launched in 2019, and Heppler which came out in 2020. The Sigmas have an insert and softer feel while the Hepplers have a machined face and it will come off a bit firmer and faster. There are nine shapes to choose from.

One of the best Ping putters in this range is the Fetch which has been a really big success for the brand and Lee Westwood has used it. The centre cut-out means you can pick the ball out of the hole (when we’re finally allowed to take the flagstick out) and this and the colour contrasting are great to help with your alignment.

TaylorMade Spider S Putter

TaylorMade Spider S Putter Review

+ Great for putts from distance even if you mishit it
– The ‘pop’ sound is maybe louder than you’d like

This launched last year and has a tungsten weight at the back and is completely hollow in the middle. Much of the weight has been shifted into that tungsten bar at the back and this helps increase the moment of inertia and resists twisting on off-centre hits. So this should be the most forgiving putter in the TaylorMade family.

This is a face-balanced putter so will suit a straight-back, straight-through stroke and comes in navy and white. Another nice feature are the three sightlines that contrast nicely and you can pick up your ball with it should someone be kind enough to give you a putt.

Axis 1 Rose Putter

Most Forgiving Putters

+ It’s a thing of clinical beauty and Rose’s putting stats have improved significantly
– It’s one of the pricier putters on the market

When this was launched it was said to be the world’s first ‘Perfect balance/Torque free’ mallet putter. This was done by placing the centre of gravity exactly in the centre of the face and in line with the axis of the shaft which is said to create a perfectly balanced putter.

Justin Rose said of the putter: “I’d been wanting to use Axis 1 for a couple of years but hadn’t been able to. That was a big part of my decision and why I changed equipment (from TaylorMade to Honma).”

The putter remains in the bag, unlike Rose’s association with Honma.

Odyssey 2-Ball Triple Track Putter

Odyssey Stroke Lab Triple Track Putters Review

+ The alignment is off-the-scale good when you set the putter down
– To get the full benefit you might need to switch to Callaway’s Triple Track ball which might not be to everyone’s taste

This is the latest incarnation of the 2-Ball putter and the obvious thing straightaway is how much help you’ve got with your alignment; you’ve got the two balls on the putter head and, should you use a Triple Track ball, you should be in no doubt as to where you’re aiming. The technical term for this is Vernier Hyper Acuity which, in simplest terms, refers to the ability of the brain to process subtle differences in alignment detected in the eyes.

Mizuno M.Craft 2 Putter

+ Incredible looks and the milled face is amazing
– There’s no topline alignment if that plays a big part in your putting

Mizuno are back in the premium putter market with three M-Craft models. The 1 is a square back with a mid slant neck to help with an exaggerated putting arc, this is the 2 which is a classic heel-toe with plumber’s neck and is suited for a moderate putting arc. The 3 is a face-balanced mid-mallet so suitable for those with less arc in their stroke.

They are all forged from premium carbon steel and then beautifully CNC-milled and the results are exquisite – there are also adjustable sole weights for added customisation.

You might not have considered a blue finish before but this might change your mind.

Odyssey Toulon Chicago Putter

+ Very easy on the eye and enough of it to suit a number of players
– If you do like to rotate the putter then there might be more suitable options

The Toulon range all feature Odyssey’s Stroke Lab technology and each putter comes with a 20-gram weight – and there are 7 and 40-gram options depending if you want a lighter or heavier feel. There are nine models and this is a very simple and beautiful wide blade which is inspired by Odyssey’s One Wide.

The deep diamond grooves create a soft but crisp feel and a lovely roll while the stunning charcoal smoke finish is a feature of the Toulon family.

Cleveland Frontline Elevado Putter

Cleveland-Frontline-Elevado-web

+ Easy to align and the S-shape groove pattern regulates ball speed across the face
– It might take a big leap of faith to give it a go

This is something different. Cleveland have moved the centre of gravity forward to the front of the head when conventional wisdom says you need to push it back.

They’ve done this by developing new forward weighting technology and by having two tungsten weights into the face of the putter – the result being better stability through the impact.

Within the Frontline range there are a variety of other shapes to choose from including the Frontline 4.0 blade or Frontline Iso model.

TaylorMade Spider X Putter

spider-x-address-web

+ If you haven’t at least tried this premium putter then you’re missing out
– The copper look might alienate a few but this is probably being picky

This is TaylorMade’s best putter in terms of tour preference and sales. It’s the hottest putter on the PGA Tour and Sergio Garcia won with it recently and he’s not even paid to use one. Jon Rahm uses the Chalk version but it’s Rory McIlroy who moves the needle and he’s really benefited from it. The True Path alignment has been optically engineered to help golfers with their visuals and McIlroy loves it.

“I loved it from the start. They first showed it to us at this photo shoot and I loved it. It’s a little bit more compact than the original Spider. One of my bad habits in my putting is that I would address the putter a little out at the toe. So to have that white channel right in the middle, the exact same width as a ball, I can centre the ball on that. Without even making any changes mechanically to my stroke, my stroke has got better because I aim my putter correctly.”

Evnroll ER10 Outback Putter

+ You’ll struggle to find a putter that helps you more
– This might be too big for even the biggest mallet fan

The Evnroll range comprises every shape and size with this new face-balanced ER10 Outback model offering maximum stability and forgiveness via an ultra-high MOI. It takes its name from the boomerang-shaped stainless steel rear wing and this weight varies according to putter length for a consistent balance and feel.

The idea behind the milling on an Evnroll putter face is to enhance performance on heel and toe mishits so they stay on line and roll virtually the same distance as well-struck putts. There are also a vareity of blades and mallets to choose from as well.

Rife Riddler Putter

+ Has a premium finish and is easy to align at address.
+ Rolls the ball noticeably well
– Seemed to offer slightly less forgiveness on significantly off-centre hits than other models of a similar style.

The Rife Riddler is made from 304 stainless plumbers blade steel and has Rife’s milled face system known as Roll Groove Technology, both of which are designed to ensure roll and consistency.

We love the black PVD finish and the value on offer here is second to none.

Scotty Cameron Phantom X 12 Putter

Best Scotty Cameron Putters

+ Great for alignment and great on any off-centre strikes
– You might need to get past the looks first before picking one up

This is the flagship putter in the range and there is plenty going on here with wings like a jet. A raised flange tapers back for plenty of alignment help and this is forgiving on your off-centre strikes and there is a lot of stability here. Part of the overall Phantom X mantra is to provide a host of options so there’s something for everyone and, across the board you’ll find something to suit.

Ping Sigma 2 Anser Putter

Best Ping Putters

+ Looks amazing and guaranteed to inspire
– Not as forgiving as many so you’ll need a tidy stroke

The Anser has always been crucial to the Ping family – the model turned 50 in 2016 – and this is the Sigma 2 version. This features the traditional heel-toe ballast and is so easy on the eye it’s always a delight. The alignment line sees you set up to the ball easily and, while it might not boast huge forgiveness, that’s not really why you’d be giving this a go. If you want to feel good about yourself standing over a putt and looking down on something special this ticks that box. Also comes in a Stealth finish.

In terms of the whole Sigma range, we love the fact you can make subtle adjustments to the putter’s length until you settle on what feels the best. On all of the models too the soft feel is noticeable whilst also feeling solid when needed.

Wilson Staff Infinite Bucktown Putter

+ This comes at a great price for what has gone into the club
– It might not have the star appeal of some of its contemporaries here

There are eight head shapes in the Infinite line-up and this fang is the most successful. It features counter-balanced technology and each of them is named after a landmark or neighbourhood in Chicago. This is a very stylish product, with great detailing, with an ultra dark PVD finish to reduce glare and help with sight lines. The face is double milled to promote a great roll and distance control.

PXG Operator Gen2 Putter

Most Forgiving Putters

+ The sound and feel should be music to your ears
– The price might not be

As is the way with PXG the products are nods towards the founder Bob Parsons’ service in the military and Operator is the specific term for Delta’s operational personnel.

The putter is extremely forgiving, extremely bold and busy and there is a wide range of adjustability. Should you get your hands on one you’ll notice the double-bend hosel that creates a full shaft of offset and it’s suited to the straight-back-and-through putter.

If the Operator isn’t for you then the Gen2 range has several blade and mallet styles to suit all golfers.
