Golf has been played here on the inner Hebridean island of Islay since 1891 when Willie Campbell laid out a course above Laggan Bay on land he described as singularly well-suited for golf. Not long, it relies heavily on alternative means of defence, including some thought-provoking blind shots and a burn beside the pretty par-3 10th. The links follows an anti-clockwise oceanside loop from the hotel to the 12th before weaving its way home back and forth among the dunes. The only island course in our Top 100.

Panellists’ comments: “A real step-back-intime feel to this dramatic links”; “A bit of a trek, but well worth the effort”
