When Sunningdale’s committee decided to build a new course, the club’s first secretary, Harry Colt, was the obvious man for the job.

His creation was rugged with deep bunkers and small undulating greens – a course to test the better player.

Although there have been some significant alterations, the majority of Colt’s work remains.

His legacy is perhaps best evidenced by the five wonderful par 3s and it’s here the New really shines.

Each demands precision, often to a deceptively narrow target.

Only one measures over 200 yards proving clever design, rather than length, makes a short hole tricky. FB

+ Serious test for better players; excellent facilities; great club atmosphere
– Expensive; too hard for higher handicappers
