Callaway Mack Daddy PM Grind 2 Wedge
Co-created by Phil Mickelson and Roger Cleveland, the Callaway PM Grind 2 is a new take on the original PM Grind that was custom-built for Phil in 2014. It’s been designed specifically with three key short shots in mind – the low-flying, spinning knockdown pitch, the hit and check pitch and the classic Mickelson flop-shot.
For the PM Grind 2, Callaway increased the offset of the clubface to make it easier to move the ball back in the stance and move the hands forward when hitting the knockdown.
Higher toe means lower trajectory
The face also features a higher toe, with reduced weight on the sole and a higher centre of gravity to promote a lower trajectory, with spin. There’s also more, grooved, space high on the face for flop shots.
A key feature is the Groove-in-Groove technology, created by machining micro-grooves into the face at a 20° angle – testing showed it to increase spin by up to 12% on lob shots compared with the Mack Daddy PM Grind and we certainly found the level of spin generation to be impressive
The wedges have a C-grind sole, providing relief at the heel and toe for clean turf interaction, with loft/bounce combinations of 54°/14°, 56°/14°, 58°/12°, 60°/12° and 64°/10°.
Different look, incredible performance
The look of these wedges is undoubtedly a little different to a standard classic wedge shape, but you soon get past that when you witness the performance. The spin is impressive as is the ease with which the club slides under the ball from a variety of lies.
We loved the lower flight and higher spin achieved on fuller shots – it looks cool when it comes off, but it’s also very useful, particularly in windier conditions. Another key feature we found brilliant was the secondary bounce which greatly assists when you lay the face open for a bunker shot or a flop. Designed by two masters of short game, the PM Grind 2 is a pretty incredible weapon.
