Garmin Approach G80
It doesn’t seem all that long ago since the first golf GPS devices became available. Now, it’s not just about having a personal caddie at your disposal to help course management, feature-packed models like Garmin’s Approach G80 are mini computers providing the type of swing data feedback tour pros demand.
More than yardages
This is a device that will help you to ‘know your game’. If you’re still looking at the premium price tag, this, in part, is because we’re talking about a golf GPS with an integrated launch monitor. For serious golfers, or more regular players, having the scope to track and analyse your swing is very attractive.
If you’re clued up enough to make sense of the data, numbers such as club head speed, ball speed, smash factor and swing tempo, then you have everything you need to identify your strengths and weaknesses and keep tabs on every aspect of your game.
Then there are the features, many of which we can come to expect, such as distances to the front, middle and back of the green. However, features such as Garmin’s PlaysLike Distance gives you distances to the target, adjusted for uphill or downhill shots, which can be easily turned off for tournament play. Meanwhile, Green View allows you to zoom in on the green to get precise yardages according to wherever the pin is on the day. The only excuse you’ll have for a loose shot is poor execution.
Keeping pace with the social world, the Garmin Approach G80 works with the free Garmin Golf app, which lets you compete, compare and connect with fellow golfers – great fun if that’s your thing. All this in a slim device with a 3.5″, sunlight-readable, colour, touchscreen display. Just don’t lose it.
