Indeed, TaylorMade's current ball range has plenty of options for different types of golfer. Whether you're after more spin and control around the greens, a ball that offers all-out distance, or one of the best golf balls for women, there's an option for everyone.

Reasons to avoid

The garish design may distract some

When it comes to starting new trends TaylorMade is at the forefront, and the same goes with the Tour Response Stripe. The main feature of this ball is the great design on the ball that is there to assist golfers align their ball on the greens. The inclusion of a big colorful stripe on the ball might not suit everyones eye but it plays a purpose when it comes to lining up good putts and you can easily tell when a good putt has been hit, as you can watch its role end of end a lot easier.

This level of feedback is crucial when it comes to shaving shots off your score as you can make adjustments and see where you might be hitting bad putts. This ball is the same as the Tour Response ball but with the addition of this stripe, so you know you are getting great performance out of this ball. It is there for long distances off the tee thanks to the three-piece casing, this ball is an excellent all-rounder and really helps those who are working on their putting.

Best value

taylormade rbx soft

Specifications

Construction: Two-piece
Colors: 1 (white)

Reasons to buy

+
Good all-round performer at a very attractive price
+
Very soft for enhanced feel will help in the short game
+
Offers plenty of distance for those with slower swing speeds

Reasons to avoid

-
May launch too high for those who naturally hit it high already

The RBZ Soft offers the user a good all-round performance without having to break the bank as you would with a more premium ball. This ball has a fast REACTcore that stores up energy and releases it with each shot to help increase distance. The LDP 342 high lift with a low dimple design really helps to improve launch making it higher and keeping the ball in the air longer for greater distances. We really noticed this in our testing, especially on those days when the wind got up, and the ball seemed to penetrate really well in the wind.

It is let down slightly in the short game as it does not seem to be consistent when it comes to this area of the game. Although there was some spin control with wedges these were not coming out consistently when compared to premium models, but given the price of these balls this is to be expected. But for the price the overall performance was reasonable, so for those seeking longer distances and great value for money then this ball is for you.

Struggling here! It does everything I want a ball to do!

So has TaylorMade really improved on what was already a decent premium ball? Well yes, it would seem so, this ball really ticks all the boxes you would want from a premium ball and beats the previous version. There is a new Speed Wrapped Core that is a new lower density acoustic material, this makes the core of the ball before the three-layer Surlyn is added and then the urethane cover. The new core gives a much softer sound when compared to the previous model, this according to TaylorMade has allowed them to make it harder and faster without any compromise to the feel or acoustics.

When it comes to performance this ball was seriously impressive, we found that anything TaylorMade had claimed about this ball was true. Without even getting it on the sim and seeing the data we could feel an improvement through the bag, with it giving a lovely soft impact and more muted audio.

Once we got it on the launch monitor it just confirmed everything we thought, the speed we were getting was much improved, and through the bag we saw a 1.5mph increase for irons and then 3 mph for driver which is great for those looking for a little more distance.

Gives up distance versus TP5x

The major upgrade that we see in 2024 for TP5 is the core, they have now altered the material used using a low density acoustic material that has a softer sound and feel. What this does for TaylorMade is allow them to make the ball harder and faster to boost the overall speed without a loss to feel or acoustics, thanks to the ball being softer in its original state.

When it comes to performance the 2024 TP5 does everything that is suggested it will, loads of spin around the greens and lovely soft feel throughout the bag, but to us maybe it feels a little niche. the other in the family the TP5x also gives you good spin levels around the green but has more ball speed, and there are not many that would sacrifice that ballspeed for a little more spin around the greens. We feel that a bulk of sales for TaylorMade are coming from the TP5x rather than this TP5.

The TP5 was around 2 mph slower for driver we did not see any big spin jumps so there is a nice consistent ball flight and and manageable one. This isn't anything to aggressive and nothing floaty it sits in a really nice window.

TaylorMade TP5 Pix Golf Ball

Specifications

Construction: Five-piece
Colors: 1 (white but special edition patterns available)

Reasons to buy

+
Tour-proven visuals co-designed by Rickie Fowler
+
Provides immediate feedback on how the ball is rolling

Reasons to avoid

-
Graphics may be overly fussy for some golfers

The TP5 Pix is an identical construction to the TP5 and TP5x and comes in both models. The big difference you will find in the Pix is not only the style of the ball having the different images on it but this creates an alignment aid down the ball. This then allows you to line up putts with a better visual and also gives you more feedback on how you have hit the put.

With this alignment you can see if you struck the putt well as you will see it go end of end a lot easier than with the standard lines on the other models, this is great for those looking to improve their putting and practice with more efficiency.

TaylorMade Soft Response 2022 Golf Ball Review

Specifications

Construction: Three-piece
Colors: 3 (white, yellow, red)

Reasons to buy

+
Excellent feel off the putter face
+
Superb short game spin control

Reasons to avoid

-
Faster swingers may see a drop off in driver distance

This 50-compression ball from TaylorMade is called the Soft Response and they claim it is the softest ball they have ever produced. We noticed this instantly in testing with it having a lovely feel off the putter face and we felt we definitely holed more putts with this ball out on the course.

We found the spin from the Soft Response was only fractionally behind that of the Titleist Pro V1x around the greens. But when it comes to driving the ball and hitting iron shots you could tell this ball was designed for those with slower swing speeds, we think this because in testing when averaging around a 112 mph swing speed you could see a drastic drop in flight mid way through the balls journey.

There is definitely some great value for money here, as it gives you great performance for a fraction of the premium ball costs, but is best suited to those with a 90mph or less swing speed.

TaylorMade Tour Response Golf Ball

TaylorMade Tour Response 2022 Golf Ball Review

Specifications

Construction: Three-piece
Colors: 3 (white, yellow)

Reasons to buy

+
Fairly soft feel on the greens
+
Good greenside spin control
+
Consistently strong ball flight

Reasons to avoid

-
Not quite as long for the faster swinger off the tee

This model sits just below the TP5 and TP5x and that is the Tour Response, we could see multiple improvements when compared to the previous iteration. The ball was a faster off the face by around 3 mph with a little less spin too.

What this gave us was at least six extra yards of carry and seven yards in total, we could see that it spun up less with irons and wedges as well but the overall control and feel was not lost. This ball felt great when used with putter and gave a lovely soft feel off the blade. The long game performance overall was taken up a notch, for a relatively low compression ball the strength of ball flight and overall distance was impressive. With that paired with the spin control offered from the cover you have a really great all round ball.

Best for distance

TaylorMade Distance+ Golf Ball

Specifications

Construction: Two-piece
Colors: 2 (white, yellow)

Reasons to buy

+
REACT Speed Core and aerodynamic cover design boost ball speeds
+
New ‘plus’ alignment helps you line up and aim better on the greens

Reasons to avoid

-
As with any distance ball, feel and control are not its primary attributes

The Distance+ is meant to offer a high velocity performance to give more distance on all shots. With a REACT Speed Core and high speed but low drag aerodynamics you can tell this ball has been built for speed, and we found in our testing that it definitely matched the premium balls and had great results.

You get great feedback through the bag with this ball and it comes with a good alignment aid on the ball which helps with lining up putts and tee shots, while also offering feedback on putts with an easy to see line, giving you a good look if putts are going end over end.

Another great all rounder from TaylorMade with the Distance+ it is very durable and we used the same ball for 18 holes in testing with limited wear and tear. Overall we think it will help out those who need more launch off the tee and price point appealing to a wide range of golfers.

TaylorMade Kalea Golf Ball

Specifications

Construction: Two-piece
Colors: 3 (white, purple, peach)

Reasons to buy

+
Will help slower swings create more ball speed and distance
+
Available in white, matte purple and peach

Reasons to avoid

-
Medium to fast swings speeds will not reap maximum benefits from its design

The Kalea is TaylorMade's ladies ball who on average tend to swing it slower than that of a man, however this ball can be used by anyone with a slower swing speed as long as you like the colorschemes. This ball is a low compression ball so it generates more lift to create better distance, it also has a high energy REACT core to help maximise your driving distance.

Our tester Alison Root said of these balls in her review; 'As someone with a moderate swing speed, off the tee there was distinct energy off the clubface with a pleasant sound and the result was and a high-launching and penetrating ball flight. Distance was good, although there were no significant yardage gains. The soft ionomer cover does allow you to feel in control of short game shots, it caught the ball nicely on the greens, and it had a satisfying sound and roll off the putter head.'

The color is also a design feature as these balls are available in three - white, purple and peach.

How we test golf balls

Our team at Golf Monthly play a lot of golf and we always play in different conditions this puts us at a great advantage to test balls rigorously and really get the pros and cons down the a tee. We have golfers of all abilities giving us a broad spectrum of knowledge and understanding so we can cover more aspects in our testing. This means people who maybe have slower swing speeds can test the balls made for them and the big hitters can test the others, this gives us more insight and allows us to pass more valuable info onto you when it comes to purchasing balls.

We test balls out on the course and on putting greens using them over numerous rounds and hours to make sure we get all the data we need. We also make sure to test them for all types of shots, bunkers, chips, driving and long irons etc. This gives us more data and a understanding of where the balls shine and where they don't perform as well. We also like to state that no manufacturer can buy a good review, we will give our honest opinion whether good or bad, to make sure you can make informed decisions.

How to choose golf balls

Soft or firm?

The best premium golf balls come in alternative versions that spin slightly less for players who prefer a firmer feel or more control off the tee. Try both from various distances to find your preference.

Cover material

Urethane-covered balls offer the best spin control and feel but do cost more. Experiment to see if you notice enough of a difference to justify the extra cost, or whether the best mid-price golf balls might be an option.

Long game or short game?

Which aspect of the game is most important to you? Do you want to get as much distance as possible out of your golf ball or would you prefer a model that allows your short game to flourish thanks to improved feel? Well we have created guides for both. If you value the former then check out our guide on the best distance golf balls. Or, if you put a real premium on feel, perhaps our best soft feel golf balls guide might be a good next step.

Price

No buying guide would be complete without at least mentioning the price factor. Thankfully most brands make models at different price points so you can rest assured there will be a top-performing model for you, however much you want to spend. Additionally another tip we have when it comes to golf balls is to practice with the same golf ball you play in competition because it will improve feel for a more reliable short game.
