Golf theft claims up 27% in October

Golf equipment claims made to Churchill Home Insurance due to theft were up 27% in October last year.

The rise in claims is thought to be down to people storing their clubs away for the winter months, making their equipment easy targets for burglars.

More than £800,000 worth of golf equipment has been claimed for by Churchill customers in the last two years.

Martin Scott, head of Churchill, said: "As the weather turns, people often stash their equipment in sheds or garages making it a prime target for thieves.

"If you have to keep expensive equipment like golf clubs in a garage or shed, keep it out of sight and consider investing in extra security measures such as proximity alarms or security lights to keep potential burglars at bay."

The findings concluded that PING was the most commonly claimed for brand, making up 23% of the total claims made. TaylorMade was the second highest with 21%, with Callaway and Titleist making up 18% and 12% respectively.

The most valuable brand was Mizuno, with an average claim around £202. Callaway is the second highest with an average claim of £158.

Of all claims made over the last two years the Callaway Euro Chev trolley bag was the most common. The PING G20 Fairway 3 iwasthe second most claimed for item, followed by the Scotty Cameron California Monterey putter.

Another of Churchill's discoveries was that four of the top 10 items stolen were putters.

Mr. Scott added: "Always keep receipts and take photographs to help your claim progress should the worst happen.

"It is also important to check your insurance policy limits for specific items, such as sporting equipment left locked in the garden shed."
