Puttenham Juniors win Christie Cup

On Monday 28th July Puttenham Golf Club's Junior team won the Surrey Amateur Golf Union's prestigious Christie Cup competition

From an original entry of nearly 50 clubs, the three-man team from Puttenham, consisting of Joe Bailey, Jack Clegg and Arthur Simmons progressed through early rounds in this knock-out competition. Wins against Chobham, Betchworth Park and Farnham enabled them to compete at Guildford Golf Club in the finals day on Monday.

The semi-final and final are played on the same day, and in sweltering conditions Puttenham Juniors beat off stiff competition from Camberley Heath to progress to the afternoon final against Goal Farm, Pirbright. The three-man team has the best two stableford scores count against the opposing teams. Even with Bailey and Clegg failing to score any points on the last hole they still managed to card 37 and 36 points respectively which proved too strong for Goal Farm.

Commenting on the win, Puttenham's Junior Organiser Simon Link said, "We are all incredibly proud of the lad's achievement, in winning this prestigious county competition. In exceptionally tough conditions they performed brilliantly and have played some superb golf, not only today but also in previous rounds. We now need to see if we can go one step further and put in another great performance at the national finals in two weeks time."

The Puttenham team now go on to represent Surrey in the National Junior Champions finals day at Harewood Downs, Amersham on the 9th and 10th of August.
