With GM’s regular tipster Michael Weston having such a torrid time of it, he has been benched this week as the European Tour heads to India for the Avantha Masters.

With the cream of the European Tour either playing in or en route to America ahead of the first WGC of the year next week the tournament is wide open for an unknown to grab their first victory or for a sleeping giant to remember what it feels like to win.

With such an open field this week you would think that a local player would use this to their advantage, however not one Indian made the top ten last year.

Australian Andrew Dodt did triumph last season and I am going to stick with his home country as my choice to win this season.

Brett Rumford was well placed last week in Dubai before a final round 75 meant he dropped to 20th position, while Scott Strange’s 68 last Sunday moved him up to fourth.

I would not be able to forgive myself if I failed to mention David Howell, Golf Monthly playing editor and former Ryder Cupper. He missed the cut last week, but was fifth the week before in Qatar, and at 40/1 is a good price.
