Alfred Dunhill is offering one lucky bidder a chance to take an official place in its Links Championship this October by offering it as the star prize in an internet auction that starts today.

Between today and 12.00pm on September 9th, members of the public will be able to log on to www.qxl.com/golf and make a bid for this unique prize. The winning bid will then earn a place in the field for the prestigious tournament that runs from October 5-8. The winner will be treated like a top professional and the prize is very generous – it consists of entry to the tournament, five nights of accomodation for two people at an official tournament hotel, airport transfers from Edinburgh and VIP invitations to the championship’s social events. The championship is being staged over three venues – St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns.

All of the proceeds from the auction will be going to the Pilgrim Foundation, based in St Andrews. The Pilgrim Foundation is an organisation committed to the restoration of historic monuments and buildings in the town. The charity has many famous patrons, including Sir Sean Connery, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Seve Ballesteros and Peter Alliss.

The tournament sees professionals and well known amateurs competing together for the prestigious prizes. Last year the professional competition was won by Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie, who will be present in October to defend his title. Many famous faces have appeared in the amateur event over the last few years, notably Sir Bobby Charlton, Sir Steve Redgrave, Boris Becker and Gary Lineker.

Last year Alfred Dunhill’s charity auction raised £15,500 for the Pilgrim Foundation, but they will be looking to raise a great deal more with this unique prize on offer. Entrance to the tournament itself is free on the first three days, rising to £15 (concessions available – students and children free) for the final day on Sunday.
