Christy O’Connor Jnr has officially opened the Oceânico O’Connor Course at Amendoeira Golf Resort in Portugal.

The former Ryder Cup star’s par 72 championship course is overlooked by a statue of the famous Irish golfer defeating Fred Couples in the 1989 Ryder Cup at the Belfry.

O’Connor Jnr said: “This has been a fantastic occasion and I’m delighted that my family could be with me to share this experience.”

Featuring lush landscape, orange groves and large lakes, the course even includes its own version of Augusta National’s Amen Corner.

The official opening comes ahead of the European Tour’s Portugal Masters, which starts on 16 October at the Arnold Palmer-designed Oceânico Victoria golf course.

Property and leisure specialists Oceânico Group recently opened the Faldo Course and now boast seven championship tracks - Oceânico Victoria, The Oceânico Old Course, Oceânico Millennium, Oceânico Laguna and Oceânico Pinhal.

Amendoeira itself has become the most significant new development in the Algarve in recent years and sits just 35 minutes from Faro airport.

And with the opening of the Oceânico O’Connor Course, the Amendoeira Golf Resort epitomises Oceânico Group’s vision for golf in the region.
