Early starters rise in Italian Open

Lucas Bjerregaard, Jens Fahrbring and Martin Kaymer were among the golfers to play well on the second morning of the 2015 Italian Open

Lucas Bjerregaard from Denmark and Sweden’s Jens Fahrbring were among the early starters to take advantage of a beautiful morning at Golf Club Milano in the second round of the 2015 Italian Open.

Bjerregaard, 24, shot 65, seven under par this morning to reach 13 under par for two rounds and take a share of the lead midway through the second round. Meanwhile, 31-year-old Fahrbring posted the lowest score of the morning’s play, with a 64, eight under par, to join Bjerregaard at 13 under.

At the time of writing the Scandinavian pair lead by two from Frenchman Romain Wattel and Spaniard Pedro Oriol, with Germany’s Martin Kaymer among a group of four golfers to have completed 36 holes at 10 under par, three shots off the lead and in a tie for 5^th.

With a world ranking of 22, Kaymer is the lowest-ranked golfer playing in this week’s field, and rounds of 68-66 on the inviting GC Milano course have put the double major champ in a strong position as he bids for his first win of 2015.

"I didn't play as well as yesterday in terms of striking the ball but I managed the par fives really well today and played them in five under par, and then it was nice to finish off with a birdie to put myself in a really good position for the weekend,” said Kaymer, 30 - whose last victory was the 2014 U.S. Open - after his round.

"These are the days you need to enjoy because I scored better than I played and they do not come along too often - usually it goes the other way! The main difference to yesterday was that I missed more fairways. Six under isn't an amazing score today but 10 under for two rounds is not too bad.

"I feel like I have been playing good for the last couple of months but not good enough to have a chance on Sunday, but it has been getting better and better and hopefully I can give myself a chance to win this weekend."
