Justin Rose will also be in the field alongside McIlroy, with former major winner Webb Simpson another man who'll be hoping to be in contention on Sunday.

Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas are two promising players worth keeping an eye on throughout the week.

Chris Kirk and Charl Schwartzel return from Presidents Cup duty to take their place in the field, with the former aiming to win on Tour for the third year running.

The favourites for this week are McIlroy (4/1 at William Hill) and Rose (8/1 at William Hill).

Frys.com Open golf betting tips advised bets

Hideki Matsuyama – 17/1 at Coral. He enjoyed a strong season, finishing fifth at the Masters and also recording another eight top 10s. In his last four stroke play events, he’s finished T13, T25, T7 and T12. A good week could be on the cards.

Charl Schwartzel – 40/1 at Ladbrokes. The South African secured a T3 finish at the Wyndham Championship when the pressure was on to qualify for the FedEx Cup play-offs. He’ll be expected to be a high finisher this week, so performing well under pressure might suit him.

Chris Kirk – 40/1 at Unibet. Gunning for his third year on Tour in which he’s won at least once, Kirk could secure that win early this season Given the field is without some big names, the American could have a strong tournament.

Johnson Wagner – 125/1 at Totesport. Wagner lost in a play-off at the Shell Houston Open in April and enjoyed two other top 10s last season. An outside bet certainly, but one with recent experience of climbing leaderboards to record a high finish.
