GM Course of the Week is Pannal GC
Beautiful, testing and well-priced: Pannal Golf Club should be on your must-play-list. If you are anywhere near North Yorkshire this week, go and check it out, you won't be disappointed.
The course is famed for it?s supremely scenic setting. Beyond the beautiful mature trees that line the course there are views to Almscliffe Crag in the west and as far as York Minster in the east.
Course lowdown: You?ve got to drive the ball well round Pannal ? not just to keep it in play but to set up approach shots, particularly at the reachable par 5s. Try to leave yourself on the right side of the hole or a three-putt could be the result. A 455-yard dog-leg right to left, the 6th is the toughest. You must drive at least 170 yards to carry the heather and reach the fairway. The approach is downhill with out of bounds waiting five yards behind the green.
Stats: par 72, SSS 72, 6,622 yards
Green Fees: £45 wd round, £55 wd 36-holes, £60 we round.
Location: Follifoot Road, Pannal, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, HG3 1ES
History: When play began at Pannal Golf Club in September 1906, the course was over just nine holes. It was not long before Sandy Herd was employed to lay out a second nine and a match between the great champions James Braid and Harry Vardon marked its opening in 1908.
