Honda Classic preview

A field of 144 competes on the PGA Tour this week in the Honda Classic at the PGA National in Florida.

TOURNAMENT: The Honda Classic

HOST COURSE: PGA National Resort and Spa, Champion Course, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida

WHEN: March 1-4

PRIZE FUND: $5.5 million

COURSE DETAILS: 7,251 yards, par 70, designed by Jack Nicklaus

KEY HOLE: 16th

The Jack Nicklaus crafted course rewards the cerebral golfer with water coming into play on 16 of the holes to discourage over-ambitious play. The guile-taxing design is exemplified by a three-hole stretch of water-accentuated strife named the "Bear Trap". Holes 15-17 have been compared with Augusta's Amen Corner in terms of difficulty.

Americans have won 27 of 33 Honda Classics, but of the last 13 winners six have come from further afield, including Luke Donald (2006) and Padraig Harrington (2005).

CONTENDERS: Jim Furyk (pictured), Joe Ogilvie and Brett Quigley
