Landing zones drill – tip by Keith Wood

Golf Monthly Top 25 Coach Keith Wood explains how to get the most out of your chipping clubs.

Practicing with landing zones

Whenever you are faced with a chip you need to focus on where exactly you want the ball to land. Too many amateurs just aim at the hole without thinking about the type of shot they want to play. To help you focus on this, try the ladder drill. Place five clubs on the green as shown and hit a series of practice shots trying to land the ball in a different run of the ladder each time. Use different clubs to find different sections. By the time you?ve finished this drill you should know exactly how far each of your chipping clubs carries (with a controlled swing). When you get to the course, think about where you want the ball to land (preferably on the nearest flat spot) and then choose the right club accordingly.
