McGladrey Classic: golf betting guide

The PGA Tour returns to America after a two-week Asian jaunt for this week's McGladrey Classic at Sea Island Golf Club in Georgia.

The tournaments's increased prize pool and elevated status as a FedEx Cup event has led to a far stronger field this year.

The likes of Webb Simpson, Zach Johnson and Matt Kuchar have elected to join defending champion Tommy 'Two-Gloves' Gainey at the Seaside Course.

A number of PGA Tour players make their home on Sea Island, so this week's contest is an intriguing one.

Simpson is the 10/1 favourite with Ladbrokes, and whilst I think he's got a good chance of success, I'm choosing to look elsewhere.

Harris English, at 20/1 with Ladbrokes, looks a good bet this week. The 23-year-old won his first PGA Tour title last year and many believe he could force his way into Tom Watson's 2014 Ryder Cup team. English lives on Sea Island, he finished 15th here last year and he notched a top 10 in his last event, the CIMB Classic. Luke Guthrie, at 33/1 with Ladbrokes, has flown out of the traps this season after a solid rookie year. The young American - who won two times on the Web.com Tour in 2012 - finished fifth at the Shriners Hospitals Open and came fourth in the European Tour's BMW Masters, so he's one of the form players in the field.

Sean O'Hair, at 40/1 with Ladbrokes, is a player I think will come back strong after a lacklustre 2013 season. The re-dedicated American breezed through the Web.com Tour Finals and recorded a top 15 at the Shriners Hospitals Open. He's also finished inside the top 20 at Sea Island in each of his last two starts.

Carl Pettersson, at 66/1 with Ladbrokes, should be well suited to Sea Island's Seaside Course. The Swede won the 2013 Heritage at Harbour Town, a course with many parallels to Sea Island, and he's shown some decent form already this season.

Trevor Immelman, at 100/1 with Ladbrokes, is back to playing good golf after a raft of injury problems. He won on the Web.com Tour two months ago and registered a tie for 21st at the Frys.com Open in October. His only top 10 of the 2013 PGA Tour season came at Harbour Town and he recorded a top-5 finish at Sea Island in 2011. McGladrey Classic advised bets:

3pts each way on Harris English at 20/1 with Ladbrokes 2pts each way on Luke Guthrie at 33/1 with Ladbrokes 2pts each way on Sean O'Hair at 40/1 with Ladbrokes 2pts each way on Carl Pettersson at 66/1 with Ladbrokes 1pt each way on Trevor Immelman at 100/1 with Ladbrokes
