Michelle Wie of USA shot a closing round of 70 to win the US Women's Open at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in North Carolina by two shots ahead of world number 1 Stacy Lewis.

In her 11th appearance at the national championship, Michelle Wie managed to successfully clinch the top spot at the US Women's Open and was the only player to shoot a final score below par.

The American’s opening two rounds saw her shoot 68s to lead the field. Round 3 saw her shoot 72 which meant she trailed Amy Yang going into the final round. However Wie’s closing round of 70, finishing two under par, was enough to clinch the title by two shots, Yang's round of 74 meant she droped into 4th place.

Wie bogied the 1st  hole, but the former-teenage prodigy followed that up with 8 consecutive pars.

Stacy Lewis put up a fight shooting 8 birdies on Sunday, the most by a player in a single round at this year’s US Women’s Open.

Wie appeared to be in control of the title up until the 16th, where she drove into a bunker then hit her second shot into a bush to shoot a double bogey, this meant her lead was one with two to play.

Wie responded with a magnificent 22-foot birdie putt on 17 to reclaim her two shot lead and she managed to par the last to claim the win.

Lewis said, “I knew I had a chance but it was just great the way she [Wie] came back and won it.”

Speaking of her success, Michelle Wie said “Just seeing everyone root for me just felt so special. Just knowing that my parents were there. Just knowing that my friends were there. It felt so special. I kind of wish I could do it over and over again, it’s just so much fun.”

Wie is expected to move to Number 7 in the Rolex Rankings and has already moved to Number 1 on the LPGA Tour official Money list having crossed the $1 million mark with $1,588,465 in season earnings.
