Sergio Garcia leads in the final round of the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro with play suspended because of heavy rain. The Spaniard will resume his quest for the title on Monday.

Garcia was 15-under-par through four holes of the final round when rain forced officials to call the 38 players still to complete 72 holes off the course.

There had been some two inches of rain in Greensboro on Saturday night and, as the showers became more persistent through Sunday afternoon, it was decided to call a halt to proceedings. The players were brought off the course but it was thought they would go back out later in the day. But the rain kept falling and, at 5.30pm, Mark Russell, the PGA Tour vice president of rules and competition announced the tournament would be completed on Monday.

“It started raining and just wouldn’t stop. The golf course got to the point where it was saturated,” he said. “We got to a point where we knew we couldn’t finish … so we made a decision that we would let it drain tonight, come back in the morning and be in position to resume play at 9 o’clock.”

Garcia was a shot clear of Tim Clark going into the final round but the South African joined him on 15-under-par with two birdies in his first four holes on Sunday. A bogey at the 5th dropped him one back again, and that is where he will resume on Monday.

Clark has company on 14-under-par. Jason Dufner birdied the 3rd and 5th holes to get into a tie for second, and Bud Cauley made a birdie at his 2nd hole to also reach that mark.

This is the final event to decide the 125 players who will make it into the FedEx Cup playoffs so those around the bubble have a nervous wait. Heath Slocum was 128th going into this event but, currently on 11-under through 13 holes, he is predicted to move up to 120th.
